Fahrenheit 451: The Movie

Fahrenheit 451 was made into a movie in 1966 starring Oskar Werner and Julie Christie. The movie was directed by Francois Truffaut who also wrote the screenplay.  It was made in England and was released on November 14 in 1966.
The movie is similar and different from the book in many ways.  Because it was produced in the 60's their idea of the future is very hackneyed.  The movie portrays upside down trains and flying machines. An interesting thing in the movie is that Julie Christie plays the character of Mildred as well as Clarisse.  I think that this was an interesting way of intertwining the two characters.  In the movie Clarisse and Mildred are both in love with Montag, so casting the same actor in both roles is a very interesting tactic by the author.
There are also many other differences between the book and the movie.  In the movie there is no mechanical hound.  I find that this is a downfall to the movie.  The mechanical hound was such an interesting part of society and it showed just how twisted and bloodthirsty society was.  Montag's mentor,Faber, is also not in the movie.  Faber was a prominent character in the book it is strange not to have the presence of a mentor for Montag in the movie.
Clarisse has many different traits and story lines.  In the novel, she is a student who prefers not to take part in the "fun" activities that the other children do.  Clarisse prefers to think and observe.  But in the novel Clarisse is a teacher and she is fun loving and likes to engage her students in fun activities. Another difference concerning Clarisse is that in the novel Clarisse and Montag are friends and Montag regards her as a daughter, but in the novel Clarisse and Montag fall in love.  Unlike in the novel where Clarisse is killed by the reckless society, in the movie Clarisse does not get killed and plays a larger role throughout the movie.
There are also many smaller details; in the movie Mildred, Montag's wife, is named Linda, the parlor only has one television and many other tiny changes.  Although the book and the movie have many differences I think that the movie was an interesting interpretation of the novel. You also have to keep in mind the time frame provided for the novel and the fact that the producers were aiming the novel at a particular crowd.  It is always interesting to see what modern society does with old classic books.  The main point of Fahrenheit 451 was changed from a story of rebellion to a love story because that is what the public was most likely to watch.
Fahrenheit 451 is an interesting film.I would definitely read the book first but It is worth while to see how the m=novel was changed and twisted to fit into another media.
